On the Fly

My Design Process

A brief explanation of plastic state deformation and how my material drives my design process.

As a Blacksmith I am fascinated by the plastic state that occurs when metal is heated and in how that plasticity can be harnessed to create beautiful and functional objects.

All decisions made within any given design must be informed and considered: when working with a material like steel the only way to make those informed decisions is to learn to live with how that material lives and breathes.

Only once a maker has an understanding of how a material behaves does it become possible to design objects that honestly reflect the properties of the material.

Creating objects that are informed and considered is the focus of my professional practice as a Designer, Maker and Artist Blacksmith.
